Safety &
Risk Awareness
First Nations Land Acknowledgement
West Coast Whitewater acknowledges that our operations on the Nass River take place on the traditional, unceded territory of the Nisga'a and Gitanyow Nations, and adjacent to the Lake Babine and Gitanmaax Nations. We recognize the deep cultural, spiritual, and historical connection the local indigenous people have to these lands and waters, and we are committed to operating in a way that respects their sovereignty, values, and stewardship. We are grateful for the opportunity to travel through these territories and strive to uphold practices that honour their ongoing guardianship of the Nass and Skeena Valleys.

Multi-day whitewater rafting takes place in remote environments where risk is inherent, and understanding these risks is an essential part of your journey. With proper understanding and training, these risks can be managed and effectively mitigated to ensure safe passage for all of our participants.
Once the boats leave shore, safety becomes a team responsibility. The safety of the trip depends on each and everyone of its individual participants. We do our part; you do your part – it’s the secret to the consistently safe and stress-free trips that West Coast Whitewater is known for.
Our Responsibilities
Guides
Our guides are highly trained, drawing experience from different companies and rivers from all over the world to your river adventure. We ensure that our certifications in whitewater rescue and wilderness first aid exceed the industry standards in British Columbia, which are already some of the highest in the world. Your guides will constantly assess river conditions and group dynamics, making informed decisions to deliver the most rewarding experience possible while maintaining a safety-first approach at all times.
Equipment
Our equipment is purpose-built for expedition whitewater rafting and is selected to perform reliably in demanding, remote environments. We provide your personal essential safety gear, including high-float personal flotation devices, helmets, and wetsuits, ensuring every piece is properly fitted and appropriate for the conditions. All equipment undergoes rigorous pre-season and pre-trip inspections, with regular maintenance and repair protocols in place to ensure it meets or exceeds industry standards. In addition, each expedition carries comprehensive rescue, repair, and medical kits, allowing our guides to respond effectively to changing conditions and unexpected situations on the river.
Risk Management
Our approach to risk management is proactive, structured, and continuously evolving. Every expedition is supported by detailed planning that includes hazard identification, route assessment, environmental monitoring, and emergency response preparation before the trip begins. On the river, our guides actively assess conditions such as water levels, weather, and group dynamics, adapting plans in real time to maintain safety while maximizing the overall experience.

Insurance
We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive third-party travel insurance covering trip cancellation, interruption, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation. If you have an existing policy, please confirm that it provides coverage for remote wilderness activities and evacuation from your trip location.
Please give us a call for more information regarding preferred policy requirements and extents.
Waiver
These are wild places. Swift water, remote terrain, and unpredictable weather are part of what makes them worth going. Before your river adventure begins, please review our liability waiver to ensure that you understand the risks associated with your trip. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you’ve got any questions or require clarifications for any of our policies. We will still require a physically signed copy before you begin your journey.
